Quote, courtesy of Jimmy Mac: “Let us toast to animal pleasures, to escapism, to rain on the roof and instant coffee, to unemployment insurance and library cards, to absinthe and good-hearted landlords, to music and warm bodies and contraceptives… and to the “good life”, whatever it is and wherever it happens to be” – Hunter S. Thompson.

Illustrator: Ralph Steadman. Does lots of political cartoons & book illustration, particularly for Mr Gonzo himself, though I know him best through his terrifying drawings in a copy of Animal Farm I own. Felt a little bit like cheating to use him to illustrate an S. Thompson quote, though as the person who told me it said, it’s a little more sentimental than his usual.

Apologies for the lack of resemblance to an actual Ralph Steadman drawing – he’s a bit more difficult than the others, and I only figured out how he does his effects halfway through the drawing. Namely by abusing his pen (by never blotting, bashing the nib against the paper to get blobs of ink out then scratching it until it’s dry) and his brushes (by twisting and flicking the bristles). However, I think the drawing turned out alright as its own thing.
